The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation (LDF) is auctioning a collection of incredible works of art to raise funds for its environmental projects. The fourth edition of the LDF’s annual Gala Auction will take place on July 26 following an online preview and period of absentee bidding. The live auction will be conducted by Simon de Pury at a secret location in St.Tropez. An additional 100 lots will be auctioned online from August 10-23, following an online preview from August July 27 to August 9.
Since 2008, the LDF has supported more than 200 environmental projects across all five oceans and in more than 50 countries. The funds raised from the Gala Auction will once again go towards helping the LDF continue its ongoing support of individuals and organizations at the forefront of environmental conservation and climate advocacy. Last year’s Gala Auction raised a record $45 million, up from the $40 million raised during the 2015 event.
The live auction features 42 artworks as well as a variety of unique items and experiences. The collection of artworks is curated by Lisa Schiff, founder of SFA Advisory, and includes works by the likes of Paul McCarthy, Rashid Johnson, Sanya Kantarovsky, Adrian Ghenie, Damien Hirst, Jonas Wood, Sean Scully, Lynda Benglis, Andrea Bowers, Cecily Brown, Urs Fisher, Rudolf Stingel, Richard Prince, as well as a special commission by Lawrence Weiner. Many of the artists made new works for the auction.
The unique items and experiences include a 1963 Porsche 356 Coupe signed by some of today’s greatest film stars, the Jacob & Co. Astronomia Sky watch, a 10-day Maldives Island vacation, and a trip accompanying Prince Albert II of Monaco on a private marine expedition. There’s also an edition of Vasily Klyukin’s “Fragmented Sculpture for a Species in Decline” as well as the world’s largest bottle of Champagne: The Melchisedec Prestige Brut Comte Delavie.
Commenting on the LDF’s work, LDF Founder and Chairman Leonardo DiCaprio said: “In an age when governments are deadlocked in predictable, partisan rhetoric, it is up to every concerned individual to be a champion for our shared planet. We can start by exponentially increasing the level of philanthropic giving to organizations that are defending our natural world, and calling on the global community to take action together.
“LDF and our partners on the ground are focused on solving some of the most complex and pressing environmental challenges of our lifetime. We have made tremendous progress expanding our reach and impact. We are funding vital conservation efforts around the world, working with local and indigenous communities who are fighting to protect their lands, waters and way of life, and hastening a transition to renewable energy to combat climate change.”
